What Is FTP and How Does It Work?

FTP allows clients to upload, download and rename documents on a server. SSL encryption is used between the client and server to secure data transmissions. FTPS offers some advantages in terms of security over other file transfer protocols such as HTTPS and SFTP.

The FTPS services provides:

A ftps connection is created between the client and server on a port specified by the client or the server (depending on whether it is in explicit or implicit mode). The ftps session is encrypted using TLS in an asymmetrical manner.

FTPS servers use certificate authentication to authenticate their clients, similar to HTTPS. Certificates are signed either by a trusted CA (such as Verisign) or self-signed, and are held in the trust keys store of FTPS servers.

When using FTPS the server's certificates are automatically checked. If they do not trust the server, the client cannot connect. By doing this, the risk of a man-inthe-middle is reduced.

OpenSSL, for example, can be used to obtain the public key certificate that is required by the ftps server. This is a good idea because it ensures the client can trust the server's identity.

If the cert is not signed the ftps services will not verify its authenticity and will issue a warning message that the cert cannot be validated. The server can be contacted for more information and the issue can be resolved.

Another feature of FTPS is the ability to set up a range of control and data channels which are used to exchange directory listings and file transfers between the server and client. These data channels are configured to listen on temporary ports on demand on either the server or client (passive mode) and they close after the FTP session has ended.

Consider the number of channels and the type of channel required for simultaneous file transfers, directory listings as well as when choosing FTPS. You can reduce the size and complexity of your attack surface. This is especially important when connecting to large networks.

FTPS servers must support a range of cipher suites to provide a wide variety of options for securing communications. This is important, especially when it comes to securing connections over firewalls.

In some instances, TLS encryption may need to be disabled when transferring files. This is typically the case when a user wants to rename, move or delete files that have been uploaded in an unsecure manner.

The command channels LIST, STOR or RETR are used to rename files, delete them, or move them. You can also download files from the server. This is an excellent feature for users that have multiple connections and want to be able work in a distributed setting with the same fileserver.
